Key steps for registering out-of-area patients

When you need to register someone living outside your usual catchment or Local Health Authority, it’s important to apply the correct notations and codes. The Health Authority in England typically accepts notations such as OUT OF AREA REG, OOA REG, PC-OOA or similar variants. Check with your Health Authority to confirm the exact wording they require.

For searching or reporting, add or record 912N – “Registered patient lives outside practice area.” This ensures clinical teams can easily identify and manage out-of-area patients. You might also add a protocol alert or batch warning to highlight the patient’s status for any future interactions in EMIS Web.

Once these notes and codes have been captured, they can be viewed under Additional in the patient’s registration details. Make sure to keep a record of your Health Authority’s preferred instructions to stay aligned with their requirements.
