Registering a temporary patient in EMIS Web for GP Connect
First, confirm you have obtained the patient's consent to share their record. In EMIS Web, register the individual as a temporary patient by choosing either a short stay (15-day expiry) or long stay (90-day expiry). This classification ensures the patient’s details are separated from standard, permanent registrations.
Tip: Recording this as a temporary registration reduces administrative tasks, as EMIS Web automatically reverts the patient’s record status once the specified time has elapsed.
Synchronising with the Spine
When the patient is registered as temporary, access their record and synchronise it with the Spine. This step links the record with national systems so other healthcare providers can view the read-only GP record via GP Connect.
"Registering patients as temporary in EMIS Web allows swift access to crucial information for out-of-hours or urgent care services, saving time for clinicians and administrators alike."
Accessing the patient’s GP record
- Select the temporary patient in EMIS Web.
- Open the Care Record Summary screen, and expand the shared records pane.
- Choose the patient’s registered GP organisation under External Views.
- Confirm you have permission to view (especially if there are any additional confidentiality notices or alerts) and then open the GP Connect tab.
From here, you can see the read-only GP record, including relevant history such as medications, allergies and clinical items, helping you treat the patient without duplicating administrative processes.
