For example, when you first attempt to record a problem within a consultation, you'll be prompted to link the issue to past problems:

Should the matter be a new issue, you can search for the appropriate problem - and by selecting a problem, you'll be applying a SNOMED code.

By recording a new problem, EMIS will then guide you to provide details about the problem, so that the correct coding can be applied. For example, in the case of elbow pain, a code is added for 'Pain in elbow', and it is captured that this relates to a specific laterality, it is an active problem, first episode, and should remain on the patient summary for 28 days:
